While on her solo row across the North Pacific Ocean, Sarah has been hit by the tropical storm, Mawar and her boat, Gulliver, has rolled on several occasions. The boat has been damaged, the extent of which is as yet unknown. The team has however spoken to Sarah and she is safe and doing well.
Following an emergency call from Sarah, the Japanese Coast Guard sent a plane to assess the situation and is now sending a boat to pick Sarah up on Friday pm JST, 8th June, 2012. A Coast Guard plane is staying overhead to keep an eye on Sarah.
At this stage, no further details can be confirmed but we will post further information as and when it becomes available.
All the best

Such a shame.
Main thing is Sarah is safe & well.
Back to shore rest & recuperation.
Repairs to Gulliver & start again will be Sarah’s die hard attitude.
Good luck & keep safe Sarah.
Thanks for the up-date…and we all are worried about Sarah and glad to know that she is okay…! Hopefully safe soon. All adventurers get ‘knocked-down’ but they get-up and revise and get moving again, and that is the ‘spirit’ that Sarah represents…! Poor Gulliver…doing the best he could…! Whoa…! Currin
So relieved to hear that Sarah is ok. She has done brilliantly!
happy to hear sarah is ok,this brave and inspiring adventure is not diminished by this event,we could all do with a portion of sarahs pluck and energy in our lives, plaudits are due to her support team and a special thought for helen and sarahs family and close associates who will be relieved at the safe resolution of this incedent.
Sarah! You are an example to the world and only few people know how much fear and feelings of lonelyness can attack people like you (and me) if and when such challenges are undertaken as you are performing now. However: There are bosses and BIG BOSSES in such matters and you are to me the BIG BOSS! Do not let disappointment enter now and start fresh again later. May the Lord Jesus protect you, as he now recently did! With all of my weakly human support, Aernout Bakels (recordholder NL 200 km. non-stop skiff 2012)
Heard a brief mention of Sarah + storm on Radio 2 this morning. So sad to hear about damage to Gulliver but hopefully he can be mended and get back out there again. Hang on in there Sarah!
You are way braver than me, Sarah. I’m glad you are OK.
Hi Sara / Sarah
Thanks for the update.
Glad to hear you are safe from the washing machine.
For all those knockers out there.
If you never have a go you will never, never know.
Keep up the good work
Bruce [ from sunny Queensland[.
So glad to hear she is ok… been wondering how she faired in the storm…thanks for the update
Amazing woman! Yes to those brave people who expand all our horizons. You are one of those Sarah
Wow… really glad to hear Sarah is OK. Thanks for the uodate.
I feel the same as the previous commenters. Sarah has amazing courage and I’m so relieved to know she is okay but sorry to hear Gulliver is damaged. Thanks to the team for keeping us in the loop. My thoughts also go out to Helen and the rest of Sarah’s family.
I love you!
Sending you lots of love Sarah. You must feel so disappointed, but at least you are safe and sound. Big hugs Gxx
Great to know your safe Sarah. Hope the damage isn’t too bad and you can get back out there soon.
To the very bravest person I know… so relieved you are safe & being saved from the ravages of the storm.
Really glad to hear that you’re OK. Huge respect for what you’re attempting.
Sounds terrifying. I am amazed at how far you have gone, and how much you have already overcome. You must be exhausted.
Thinking of you,
Bad luck Sarah. Hope we hear from you soon.
Oh, that’s so tough…Very sorry to hear of damage to Gulliver but very relieved to know that you are ok, Sarah.
So so glad you are safe Sarah and disappointed that Gulliver is damaged
Thinking of you and sending good thoughts
Sorry to hear that you and Gulliver took a battering from ‘Rosie’ – very glad to hear that you are safe and well x x x
I respect your brave. We know that one of your purpose of challenge is to encourage us. Glad to hear you OK. from Japan
Glad you are safe. Sarah. Didn’t this storm realise who you were and veer away?
Sarah I know you will be feeling disappointed and we natracare sisters are all astounded that you sat out the storm so courageously, but that Rosie was never to be trusted – what with those viscious thorns hidden under those luscious petals, how was Gulliver to know? We all felt your anxiety, all held our breath and all want to give you a big hug. On the Scream-Ometer, that must have been at least three times the Indian row scream given at your talk. There are several ways of describing Sarah, but today she is to us HEROIC xxxxx Susie and the Natracare SISTERs
Glad to hear you are ok Sara! You are a true inspiration! Don’t give up!
We`ve been following you all the way Sarah.
So glad you are safe and well. You must be disappointed, but you`ve faced setbacks before and bounced back. We`re so glad Gullliver held you safe in the storm.
Yoko & Eddy
Glad to hear that you are safe!!
I am tearful with relief that you are ok Sarah. You are indeed heroic and we all eagerly await further news. What an awesome fight against a decidedly rude Rosie. We are hoping Gulliver is fixed soon and continuing to think of you often. xxx
Shame on Rosie…she was supposed to play nice. I am so thankful to read that you are safe – that’s what it’s all about really!
~Virginia Beach, VA
Stay safe Sarah. Like Al said, you are far stronger than all of us bearded explorer types!
Greatly relieved to see you have survived Rosie – I keep looking out for your posts – you are in my prayers and will be until you return home safe to Helen. Matt’s comments about your Dad were very moving and right. Hang in there, keep safe. Well done. With love and prayers, Rachel xxxxxxxxx
Hang in there, Sarah! Having a soaked cabin is clearly not a good thing, but you’ve got the CG watching over you. Which is a good reason to smile and breathe.
Really sorry to hear Gulliver’s been damaged although I’m glad you’re safe. You must be desperately disappointed.
So glad that you are safe and ok but saddenned this has happenned. We are all behind you and thinking of you and of course your Mum, Micheal and Matt. Good to know the coastguard are on the way to pick you up. The courage and strength you have shown whilst enduring this storm shows us all what amazing talents and tenacity you have. Hope the damage will not be as bad as you fear.
Much love for now and take care, hope they get to you soon so that you can get some rest and recuperate

Thanks for the update, Team L2L!
So glad to know that Sarah is safe, and in good hands! This journey is too epic to be stopped by a tropical storm. Gulliver is awesome as well. I’m sure that some repair here and there, and we’ll be seeing Sarah and Gulliver set off again.
Like all things before the success, it’s a trial, a test, a warm up.
I, along with many others, will be waiting for you in Vancouver, Sarah.
What’s currently unknown is the extent of the damage and whether there’s a boat builder / engineer travelling along with the coast guard to assess the situation at sea. Does this mean Sarah will be heading back to Japan for maybe a month while Gulliver get patched up?
So delighted that the rescue services are so active in saving this very brave girl !! We have NOT heard the last of Sarah. !!
Just heard the bad news on BBC Midlands news. Glad to hear you’re ok. Is it possible to go back to Japan for repairs and start again?.
Thanks for the update – will be following progress to Sarah’s rescue closely. Hang on in there Sarah – you are an amazing girl.
We have just read this and now will go back and look in our logs , , we are glad that the Coastguard are looking after you now , god bless .regards from Sujuan and Robert .
I must say I was fearing for your safety and Gulliver’s endurance when I started to read “altitude” figures on your tracker 7th June 2012 @05:00:38 utc. In my mind something horrific was going on. I am relieved to hear from your team that you and Gulliver are “limping”…but OK. That is GREAT NEWS !
Thanks to the Japanese Coast Guard for their response.
john, Bay of Quinte, Lake Ontario
Having just read the Guardian report on Sarah’s current situation, I just wanted to add another name to the list of people who are thinking of her and wishing her best, this one from a small and often storm-bound Greek island in the northern Aegean… although ours are probably a fraction of the size of “Rosie”… kali tiki, kai kalo taxithi; good luck and a safe journey.
Glad you are safe, hope you can keep spirit up to fight another day.
you’re my hero anyway
Start again from Japan, please!
Japanese people will support you!
Good to get an update but sad to hear about the damage to Gulliver. So very glad that Sarah is okay even if her spirits might be slightly soaky at the moment. Things are not over yet! Just re-group, re-adjust, and remain positive that this mission will be accomplished…..just with a slight delay.
Yes, thank you to the L2L team for the update and the Japanese Coast Guard!
So glad to know that Sarah is safe. JPN Coast Guard will be able to help her and the boat soon.
Glad to hear you are ok and well, what a relief after tracking your position and the storm, couldnt believe you went straight through the middle of it, great news you will be safe soon,
Hang in there Sarah! You’ll be rescued soon! You are so brave and inspiring! You have taught me how to face my fears better. The world needs you girl! Thinking of you, sandra
Glad to hear you are alright. Stay safe and I hope Gulliver is looking after you too. We are all thinking of you!
Sarah, im so sorry to hear that things have become testing and thankful that the Japanese coastguard are on their way to help you. To everyone of her followers and people who have left such positive comments, ‘Thank you!!’ and for those of you who don’t know Sarah personally this will be only push her further and harder to complete this expedition. Thank you again, and hopefully the next 18 or so hours will pass quickly and we’ll see you warm, dry and safe soon. Big brotherly love. Michael xx
So releaved you are safe and sound. Sarah Outen 007 – shaken but not stirred 🙂
Hang in there, Sarah! We are all holding you in our thoughts and prayers- you are such an inspiration!
Your stories of adventure always keep things in perspective for me Sarah, you are a true adventurer. We all know this won’t set you back. Thank heavens you’re ok, we’re all crossing our fingers and sending you our love.
Robert and I have been thinking of you. Very windy and heavy rain here in Brittany, France which made us all the more fearful of what you must be experiencing, we were so worried for you. You are one brave lass to have gone thru what you have and still willing to carry on. Hopefully you will be rescued and Gulliver will be repaired – what next I wonder………….. you never cease to surprise us ……………
Shocking news, but a reality check for us all over here. The trouble is your courage and strength have, up till now made it look “relatively” easy. I know that is far from the truth but it is the sign of a true professional athlete. Hang in there, stay safe, re-group and you will soon be back on your way.
Sending you all our love, luck and hugs…
Will & all of the Kinetic team
I was listening to the news and heard about you. Hang in there and from what I know about you it won’t take you long to get back on track. Sending you love and warm hugs till you are rescued. Xxx
If the sea was always calm you would have chosen a different journey.
Sorry to hear the news! Glad to hear you are ok.
Just heard the news; glad to hear the coastguard are on their way. An inspiration to us all xx
You are a complete inspiration. You gave me the biggest hug ever at Al’s event in London a few years ago. I wish that I could return it now.
I am glad Gulliver took good care of you and to hear that you are ok. You are the bravest person I’ve ever met. Looking forward to seeing you back in Japan.
Glad that you’re okay Sarah 🙂 Thank God for the Coastguard! The main thing is that you’re in capable hands. You’ve done brilliantly on the epic London 2 London Adventure, and I’m sure Gulliver will be repaired in due readiness for ‘take two’ across the Pacific. Life is full of such clapper-boards. In the meantime: take it easy!
Good to hear you are OK. Stay safe, please
The spirit of Sarah will adventure onward….’if at first you don’t succeed, call it, version 1.0…’
All the students here at YIS have their fingers crossed for you.
Now we’re doubly inspired.
Take care- you will be safe and warm soon.
So glad to hear that Sarah is OK!
Bad news, but not as bad as the worst I was fearing. When I read about what typhoons are and can do I was utterly terrified for you from 6000 miles away. Glad to know you’re OK, and I’m sure this experience will just add another layer to make you even more you, and give you even more internal resources to call on next time
I have been following you all the way. I saw the news this Friday evening and sadly saw you had to abandon your voyage. I am so glad you are well which is the main thing. I cant imagine how you must be feeling
dissapointed as well as relieved maybe
take care and much love to you and your family and friends
I knew something was up when I hadn’t heard anything for a bit. I’m so glad you are safe. Poor Gulliver. Is he salvageable? So is it a 3.5 year expedition now or what?
I hope all is well across the pond. The plan is to continue the journey and I hope to reveal more details next month when I have more solid news. Sadly Gulliver is non-recoverable as the Coast Guard removed the tracker.
PS will you still be Chief of Poems?
